This is my first novel by author Jennifer Gracen. I don't know if I could say definitively that I'm a lifelong fan but More Than You Know wasn't too shabby. I had a few problems with the story and all of that, which is why I'm a bit on the fence at this point.
At the beginning of the novel, the timeline was uber confusing. I wasn't really for sure what day it was in the book during the first ... I don't know ... 30 pages? The story just jumps around. A LOT. Let's say the first day in the book is Monday and then all of the sudden it's Friday and then it jumps two weeks and then a week and then a month. It was just hard to get a grip on exactly what was going on when I don't even know what day it is and everything. I wish that the time had been more clearly established or if it wouldn't have jumped around, that would have worked as well. I felt like it detracted from the story because instead of focusing on what in the world was going on, I was trying to figure out WHEN it was going on. It was just distracting.
It was about halfway into the story that I felt like something was off. You know when you leave the house and you just have this feeling like you forgot something but you have no idea what it is? That's this book for me. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, I really enjoyed Dane, Julia and (mostly) Kelvin and I enjoyed the story for the most part but there was just something missing. I think it may have been a spark but I have no idea what kind ... the spark between the reader and the book ... the spark between the two main characters ... the spark of something. Maybe that is what it is ... a spark between the main characters. Yeah ... now that I have all of this written, maybe that is part of it. The author tries to convey the spark between Dane and Julia but for some reason, it just wasn't believable. I didn't get that HOT DAMN! feeling when I was reading about these two characters. I wanted it so very badly because I liked the story between the two but I just never felt like it was there. Thanks for going on that roundabout journey with me to figure out what I was talking about.
This brings us to the ending. Which was depressing. I just didn't like it and it didn't feel like it was true to the characters or the storyline. It was ... MEH. It ended how I thought that it would but when I thought that it should go out with a bang, it just fizzled and died on me. Not how I expected and I wish that it were different but it is what it is. Maybe I'll pick up another book by Gracen in the future and I'll have a different reading experience. Hopefully.
