Book Review: Digital Velocity (McAllister Justice #1) by Reily Garrett

This is the first book I've read by Reily Garrett and while I jump into this one totally blind, I really didn't know what to expect on these pages. I found the blurb to be pretty interesting, so when the author asked me to give it a read, I jumped on it. 

The beginning of the book was a little slow for me and I think that it's because you're meeting multiple characters and you're caught in a game of catch up at first while you're delving into the plot. It's all completely necessary information but it did slow the book down a little bit for me. I found out after the fact that there is a novella that precedes this book. While I'm under the impression that it's not a "must read" for the series, I'm fairly certain that the back story included in that novella would have enriched what I was reading in this one and maybe make things seem more like a reintroduction rather than an overwhelming jumble. 

Now once you get into the book and past the beginning where you're meeting everyone, things do speed up. I was blowing through pages but then it slows down again and speeds up. I soon found myself on a literary roller coaster. Which made the book lag and then add in the fact that personally, it was just a little too descriptive and you have another lag. I just prefer to have a lot of excitement and a book that chugs along at a fairly quick pace. I'm pretty sure it's because I have to put down and then pick up whatever I'm reading multiple times throughout the day so I need something that chugs along quickly or I become lost and bored within the plot. 

The characters were okay. I really didn't have this massive connection to Lexi and like I said before, I'm pretty sure I would feel differently if I had read the novella. Apparently, that is where you get to know Lexi on a deeper level and really dive into who she is and what her motivations are. I did like Ethan but ... this will sound weird ... I liked him better when hew as with his brothers. When you first meet Ethan's brothers ... you'll fall in love with them immediately. I'm totally serious; all of them were absolutely fabulous and the camaraderie between them was wonderfully ornery and endearing. 

So when Ethan was with his brothers, the story came to life for me. 

When it comes down to it, I think that the reason this wasn't a five star book for me was because it was a little too descriptive for my tastes and I didn't really connect with the main characters. But those are all just personal things and this book is rated highly on Goodreads and Amazon, so don't take just my word for it.

Book Review: Ready to Run (I Do, I Don't #1) by Lauren Layne

As I was starting to write this review, I realized that I have NEVER given this author, Lauren Layne, less than a 5-star rating on any book that I've read by her. That's pretty amazing!! I can't say that about too many authors. 

So I guess it comes as no surprise that I gave this one five stars as well. Once again, Layne has created some unforgettable characters. Jordan is our leading lady this time and she's this polished city girl and she is as stubborn as a mule. Jordan goes for what she wants and she refuses to take no for an answer. You find out really quickly that when Jordan hears no, she interprets it as "find another way". And sometimes ... the ways she tries to go around that no are absolute genius. You can't help but just love her right from the beginning. 

And on to my favorite ... good ol' Luke. Luke is a country boy. A hunky country boy. A hunky firefighter country boy, actually. Goodness. With each word I added on there, it made me want to read this book all over again. Luke is as loyal as they come. He sticks by his friends and will take a beating if it will protect someone he cares about. I think the best thing about Luke is how he would let Jordan get under his skin and not even realize it. Let me tell you, it made for some interesting situations. The booth!!! OMG. If you have to read this book just to hear about the booth, it would be totally worth it. That was one of about a hundred of my favorite scenes in the book.

The story flows so smoothly along that before you know it, you've read the whole thing and you're left sitting there wishing that there were more pages. Layne writes such a phenomenal romance - the sex scenes are steamy, the laughter inducing situations are heartfelt and hilarious, the few sad parts are soul crushing and as a whole, the story is always absolutely unforgettable. Here's the deal ... if you're looking for a new author and you've not read anything by Layne (first of all, shame on you), give her a shot - she's one of my favorites and an author I can go to if I want a guaranteed amazing reading experience. Especially if you read this one.

Book Review: Tempting Her Neighbor (Small Town Temptations #1) by Laura Jardine

I don't usually read novellas ... the reason is only that I like a longer book. Weird, I know ... it's just that if it ends up being something that I really like, then I want as many pages as the author is willing to crank out, you know? Anyway, I went against my usual "rules" and decided to give this one a go. Not too shabby.

 

I really enjoyed our hero of the story - Cole. He was all grumpy and prickly. He reminded me of my husband. For some reason, I think that stand-offish personality is sexy as hell. I don't know why ... most of the time people think that these grouchy dudes are assholes but they really aren't ... there is usually a very good reason behind the donkey attitude. Then again ... sometimes there isn't and the dude is really just a jerk. Anyway ... Cole was a good dude. I enjoyed his grouchy attitude and the reason why he was that way. You also get to experience a pretty interesting (and extremely slow) transformation within his personality and I always enjoy a good character metamorphosis. 

I kinda liked Rachel as well ... but not as much. It was literally her character that kind of irritated me. She's the kind of chick that wants to just have fun, which is fine. I have no problem with a woman wanting to just go out there and have a much sex as possible - more power to you if that's your deal. But she would say how this is how she is and she's not apologetic for how she is but then in the same breath, she would whine and bellyache that people pick on her and if she was a dude, no one would say a thing about her promiscuity. Look, lady. You can't have it both ways. Either you don't care what people have to say or you do. Anyway, it was just the hypocrisy of her ... is that even the right word? If it isn't, hopefully you know what I mean. 

This isn't your run of the mill, sickeningly sweet romance novel. It's a bit gritty at times and definitely raunchy and naughty at other times. One thing that did stand out is that it's not really what I would consider a romance ... you don't see the romantic interaction between our two main characters ... you see this animalistic need to mate. It's not flowery with a bunch of scented candles and massage oils, it's more get your rocks off, wham-bam thank you ma'am. All in all, not a bad book, but not one to read if you're looking for the mushy love-sick page turner with the dashing guy and the girl next door wallflower.

Book Review: Her Wish (Playboy Genie #1) by Sophie H. Morgan

I really don't read that many paranormal romance novels and the few that I have read, haven't had a genie in them, so I really didn't know what to expect. Now pair that with an author that I'm not familiar with and reading this book was like stepping into the unknown. 

Let's get the stuff I didn't like out of the way ... there wasn't much. It really came down to the pace of the story. To me, it just lagged a bit and I wish it was sped up just a notch or two. I think that if I didn't feel like I was wearing heavy boots through some of it, I would have read this one in just one sitting. The pace is really the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five. There's another thing but this didn't play into my rating ... but I feel the need to bring it up because well ... my husband says I like complaining. Too true, dude. So ... the word "lover" is thrown around on these pages multiple times and I can't freaking stand that word. It's almost as bad as the word "panties". Don't know why. It is like nails on a chalkboard to me. My bestie calls her husband "love" and I want to punch her in the boob each time. 

Anyway ... now that we've gotten that nasty business out of the way ... I REALLY liked our main characters, Charlie and Jax. Charlie is this tough as nails chick that really sticks to her guns - even sometimes against her better judgement. I just really liked everything about her. She doesn't take b.s. from anyone. Cool chick. And Jax ... he's obnoxiously and irritatingly adorable. You want to just roll your eyes at this ladies man but then he does something sweet and you forget about how irritating and cocky he is and your head falls to the side as you say "awww". You won't realize it happened until you are a couple pages away and then it smacks you in the face that he's pulled the wool over your eyes. Both of these characters, and the secondaries, were really well written. 

As I was nearing the end of the book, I just kept thinking to myself that this author was NEVER going to wrap everything up in time for the last page. There was absolutely no way that all of my questions would be answered by the time I got to the last period. Well, this has only happened two other times in my life, but I was wrong. I'll admit it. Everything was buttoned up nicely at the end of the book and it was a pretty good read. I really liked how the plot played out and things happened that really kept me interested in what was going on.

I definitely enjoyed this different spin on a romance novel and I'm pretty interested in seeing how the rest of this series goes. One to watch out for, that's for sure.

Book Review: Solo (Symphony Hall #1) by Lauren E. Rico

Before I even start talking about what kind of marvelous things are going on between these pages, I think that we need to have a moment of silence for this cover because ... DAMN. 

Moving on! There's always been something intriguing about the college student/teacher romance thing AND when you throw in how these two start off ... this book was the perfect storm of disasters for the characters. I just couldn't put this book down!!

The story was absolutely fabulous. It wasn't too heavy and weighted down with details that I couldn't care less about. The author just dives right into the story and then barely gives you a second to buckle up for the ridiculously exciting plot. There were more exciting twists in this romance novel than I experienced with the last thriller that I read! Every time I turned around, there was some shocking plot twist that knocked me on my ample butt. 

OMG. The characters. I absolutely loved Katherine. I think maybe it was because I saw a bit of myself in her. Each time she would turn the other cheek, I loved her character even more. She was spunky when she needed to be and entirely too humble for her own good. And then the men in the book ... I don't want to spoil anything with names ... but the men in the book were written just as fabulously as Katherine. You hated some, loved some, loathed others ... they were all perfect. I found my views on each gentleman in the story changing as the novel chugged along. I definitely have my favorite but I'm not telling!! 

I read this one in one sitting and I wanted to start it all over again after I finished the last sentence. I positively adored this book. I'll definitely be picking up other books by this author!

When I received this book (from who I think was an editor for Heather McKenzie), I really didn't know what to think. I don't really read Young Adult novels any more and when I saw that it was published by Clean Teen Publishing ... I REALLY didn't know what to think. What I DID know is that the blurb for this book was intriguing. Here's the deal, it's not any secret that I appreciate a well placed f-bomb or a steamy sex scene in a book. While I don't seek those things out when choosing a book, I also don't mind them. But the words 'clean teen' made me think that there would be scenes that were a bit watered down. Dude. Not the case. I didn't find this out until after I finished the book but Clean Teen is all about just letting the reader know what they will find within the pages - kind of like a rating on a movie. 

Anyway, onto the book. THE. BOOK. Holy crap. I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. And maybe I went into it with some preconceived notions but those were all shot down VERY quickly and I was able to immerse myself into the interesting life of Kaya. Kaya is this amazing girl that has been through so much yet, amazingly enough, it didn't kill her spirit. I think that she is a super strong character that needs to be seen more in Young Adult novels. 

I don't really want to get into any secondary characters because well, I don't want to ruin the twists and turns on these pages. But I will say this, as a reader, you're going to REALLY struggle with whom to support. The author did a great job of putting the reader through the push and pull of good and bad. Who is good and who is bad? Don't worry. Your alliance will shift quite a few times as you steamroll through Serenade. 

The story moves along quite swiftly but not jarringly so. It's just the perfect pace. I didn't find myself getting bored or skipping even a single sentence. It was a little shocking, how fast I flew through the words on these pages. I just couldn't get enough of Kaya and her life - how things were, how things became and what could be for her future, if there was one. It's nice getting to the end of the book and being left with absolutely NO questions about characters or the plot.

It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a romantic suspense this much ... probably since my last Sandra Brown and that is saying something. ESPECIALLY for a first book from an author. Are you kidding me?!? THIS is what you're coming out of the gate with? Geez. I'm in trouble. I'll be stalking library shelves indefinitely for this author - she had me hooked after the first page. Lifetime fan. SO good.

Book Review: Eye Candy (Real Love #1) by Jessica Lemmon

For the first time in my Jessica Lemmon reading history, I didn't give one of her books 5-Stars. Dude. I'm as shocked as you are. I know that it's really not that big of a deal, I gave this one 4-Stars. That's close to the same, right? It is but at the same time, it's no where near the same. 

I don't think that there was any ONE thing that made me shake my head and say nope to a five star rating. The concept of the book was interesting ... you have these two friends ... Jackie has hard-core friend-zoned poor Vince and she's interested in this sweaty buff runner dude. Vince (being the genius that he is) decides that he is going to help Jackie get said sweaty buff runner dude and Vince thinks that he'll be there to pick up the pieces when Jackie's heart gets broken. Which, if we're being honest, is a depressing thought. Pretty sure it would just be easier to tell Jackie that he likes her rather than pushing her towards another dude but hey, who am I to say what would be easier ... I have ovaries and common sense. Most of the time. Anyway, so I don't need to tell you how things worked out with Jackie and sweaty buff runner dude.

I liked the characters okay. I actually liked Vince more than I liked Jackie. I don't know if it's because I felt badly for Vince and his idiotic ideas or what. Come on, who doesn't love an underdog. I did find myself both rolling my eyes and rooting for Vince during each sentence. Jackie kind of annoyed me ... I just wanted her to make out with Vince and his sexy tattoos already. 

Maybe that's what my issue with the book was ... it wasn't the book itself, you know, the meat of the story ... no, not Vince's meat, you perv. The foundation of the story was amazing. Maybe it was my frustration towards Jackie and her tunnel vision for sweaty buff runner dude. Honestly, we've all been there, I'm sure. You have a close friend that you don't see as being a sexual entity who happens to be made for you and you only focus on the handsome shell of a man that for some reason, you  just have to have but then you get it and you realize that you don't want it. 

Anyway ... if you could read between my random tangents,  I liked the book. It was good. Because Jackie is a blind donkey, I didn't LOVE the book but it was one that I would read again. Maybe I just need to give it a couple of months and give this one a shot again. I don't want to break my 5-Star rating streak for all Lemmon books, right?

Book Review: A Merciful Death (Mercy Kilpatrick #1) by Kendra Elliot

Before I really delve into this review, I need to tell you that I'm in the minority with my feelings on this book. Almost 1800 people have read this book as of right this moment and it's rated at almost 4.5 stars. So my one star rating is ... not common. 

After I finished this, I was a little surprised to find out that this was a romantic suspense. I mean, I must have known that at some point because I picked this book and romantic suspense is my favorite genre. But I completely forgot and this book didn't remind me with how it was written. I didn't get romance ... at all ... I mean there were parts ... but this wasn't the kind of romantic suspense that I'm used to, maybe. 

Or I guess it could be the fact that this book couldn't keep my attention. That's not a good thing. I shouldn't look forward to putting the book down. And I did. A lot. Now this book wasn't badly written, it just read very dry to me. The conversations were extremely stiff and almost robotic. The further I got into the book, it wasn't just the conversations that I found dry. It became everything. And once that hit ... it was all downhill from there. 

I didn't enjoy even one portion of this book. I didn't like Mercy or Truman and I couldn't have cared less what happened to them in the past or what was going to happen to them or if they were going to get together or what happened with the case that they were working on. This was just not a good fit for me this time.

Book Review: Wanting to Remember, Trying to Forget (Meet the Shepards #1) by Jacqueline Francis

Sometimes I think that I'm my own worst enemy when I'm reading a book. I like story-lines that are swift moving and I think that sometimes when they aren't, I sabotage my own reading experience because the book isn't moving as quickly as I want it to. I'm not entirely sure if that is what happened with this one but I suspect that it was. This book does not move quickly. That's not necessarily a bad thing. There are a lot of readers out there that don't mind the slow pace and actually prefer it. Unfortunately, I'm just not one of those people. 

This book was slow moving from the very beginning to the end. And while that captured my attention when I first started reading, it didn't keep it. I think that's because in the beginning, there is a bit of drama and drama being drawn out is amazingly frustratingly wonderful. You just want to know more but you're enjoying the suspense and watching the train wreck unfold before you - we've all been there, I'm sure. But that drawing out process throughout an entire book just doesn't blow my skirt up. To me, rather than enjoying the book, I get impatient. Impatient me is a jerk.

I liked the characters for the most part. I was told beforehand that the book featured a beta-male. Won't lie, totally looked that shit up. It's just not a phrase that I've ever heard before which is strange considering the phrase alpha-male is used quite frequently. That being said, I didn't mind that the leading man, Max, is a beta-male. I kind of liked the change of pace from all of the other alpha males I read about the rest of the year. Actually, I found him to be the most intriguing character of the whole book. It was really Danny that I just didn't really like. I don't know if it was her personality or what but I thought that she was just one of those females that would irritate me. She was completely oblivious to everything in her life and it made me want to shake her until she woke up. For me, I thought that she took a backseat to Max. I think that if the book had been primarily from his POV that I might have liked it more because I wanted to know more about him than I did her. 

I did find myself skipping some of the long descriptive paragraphs ... I like more dialogue in a book. I like those verbal interactions more than being told about them through descriptions or inner monologues. I think too much of those descriptive paragraphs can weigh a book down and that's what happened to this one when I was reading. I wanted to crack a whip and get the book moving along more. Not a bad book but not one that I'll read again any time soon since I like a more fast paced story-line.
